A local CMS only suffices up to a point – what next?

22. 08. 2025

We encounter this practically every day. Many fast-growing companies manage with a local or open-source CMS solution because "it works and we're familiar with it." However, once a company expands, changes strategy, or faces pressure for digital efficiency, it becomes clear the original system no longer suffices. Timely migration to a more robust platform ceases to be an investment question and becomes essential for the company’s continued growth.

Challenges of growing companies

At the start of business, a local CMS is a logical choice – low costs, quick implementation, and close cooperation with a local agency. Companies often value the flexibility and ability to customise the system exactly to their needs. But this model has limits that emerge when the company begins scaling or expanding its digital ecosystem.

With increasing demands – such as integrating e-commerce, CRM systems, marketing automation, or customer portals – a local CMS starts to struggle. Each third-party integration becomes more complex, adjustments take longer, and the overall solution stops being sustainable. What was initially an advantage (individual approach and simplicity) gradually turns into a barrier to further growth.

There is also the risk of technical debt. If the platform is custom-built and maintained by a small team, eventually every change will be costly and time-consuming. Transitioning to another technology is often delayed until "something breaks" – which is usually too late.

The tipping point for a local CMS

This usually happens when a company plans a website redesign or a complete digital strategy overhaul. It’s not just about visuals – it involves new user journeys, focus on data analytics, content personalisation, security and speed. Local CMSs often lack the flexibility and support to keep pace with the demands of a modern digital platform.

Another trigger may be entry into foreign markets. Local solutions are usually optimised for the Czech environment only, often lacking multilingual support or integration with global services and platforms. When a company needs a reliable solution with guaranteed availability and regular updates, limitations emerge.

Dependency on a single vendor is also a risk. If the CMS is managed by a small team or agency unable to keep up with technological development, you face vendor lock-in. The company is forced either to accept technological constraints or to undertake a difficult switch under pressure – when "deadlines are tight and outages threaten."

How to choose the right global platform

When selecting a new platform, it is essential to consider not only current needs but also the long-term roadmap. A CMS or DXP must grow with you. This means openness to integrations, modular architecture, cloud-native approach and regular development of new features. The platform should be more than just software – it should provide solid support, training programmes and partner implementers.

Security and legal compliance are also crucial. Robust DXP platforms have clear release cycles, regularly update security standards and support compliance with GDPR and other regulations. In an environment with increasing cyber security pressure, this is invaluable.

Although these platforms involve higher initial costs – we usually discuss openly with clients a 15–20 % increase for the Kentico platform – in the long run this investment pays off. Companies gain a stable base for growth, reduce maintenance costs and avoid costly future migrations. Partnership is also important – platforms like Kentico offer an open ecosystem, so the company isn’t tied to a single supplier.

Conclusion

If your company is growing rapidly, switching from a local CMS to a more robust platform is only a matter of time. It’s better to be prepared for that moment than to wait until problems become overwhelming. The right digital platform gives you room to grow without technological compromises.
